A journey through body and mask, to rediscover the expressive potential of movement and the principles that underlie every form of theatre.
The pre-expressive mask is a gateway to rediscovering the body as a theatrical instrument, and theatre as play. When the face is covered, every gesture and movement becomes meaningful, read and interpreted by the audience.
Devoid of expression, the mask amplifies gestures, reveals tensions and invites exploration of deeper truths in the present moment. This silent practice is a process of listening and transformation, enabling actors to recognise their body’s resistances and free themselves from habitual physical patterns. They become malleable matter – a blank page on which any story can take shape, with or without a mask.
The mask leads towards organicity, synthesis, and precision, refining stage sensitivity and presence.
After an intense physical journey, we will explore how the mask comes to life through breath – the fundamental principle of performance. Through rhythm, form, and movement, we will experience a universal language that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, where action becomes word and absence transforms into presence.
